THE SECOND TROPHY
WAITING TO BE WON
In August 1993, with a simple ceremony at
"Cantore" Castle, seat of the Alpine Military School
of Aosta, the 2nd Mezzalama Trophy was temporarily handed into
the care of the institute. The cup is a smaller version of the
original which has been waiting to be competed for since 1973.
In the presence of numerous people working in the area, Roman
Cugnetto, promoter, and director of the post-war games, entrusted
the sculpture to General Varda, in the hope that the contest
will soon be re-launched, and giving manifold thanks for the
decisive support provided by representatives of the armed forces
in laying men and resources at their disposal.
It was a moment charged with emotion, evocative and purposeful,
in which both young and old, together with the public administrators
of the interested valleys, were able to share the glory of the
mythical trophy, in an atmosphere of touching cooperation.
The reunion finished with the promise of a follow-up meeting,
which would have to give concrete substance to the 11th staging
of the "Mezzalama" contest.
