Ski Club Travels to Antarctica
Ski Club Rep Joins Forces with Polar Explorer on
Environmental Mission
John
Haddon, a Ski Club of Great Britain leader and rep, has this week
embarked on an international Antarctic expedition with the first man
to walk to both the North and South poles, polar explorer Robert
Swan*.
The expedition, which starts in Argentina and carries on to the
Antarctic Peninsula, will allow the 70 participants to experience
first-hand the importance of preserving Antarctica as they visit sites
previously only seen by early explorers and examine fragile
eco-systems.
Previous expeditions run by Robert Swan have removed more than 1,000
tons of metal debris to prepare the way for the creation of the first
Antarctic education base.
This year’s expedition team, which consists of corporate leaders,
entrepreneurs in the field of renewable energy, teachers and students
will take part in the opening of this education base. The first-ever
project of its kind, the sustainable building will play a crucial role
in promoting renewable energy and conservation by allowing people to
see, via a live internet link-up, webcam images and experience
Antarctica from their houses and classrooms.
During the opening of the base the expedition team will broadcast live
from Antarctica to schools and corporate partners across the globe.**
Environmental campaigners say the Antarctic is already experiencing
the effects of global warming, reporting that temperatures on the
Antarctic Peninsula have risen 2.5C in the past 50 years.
John Haddon will be writing
exclusively for the Ski Club of Great Britain’s website
www.skiclub.co.uk where he will be sending regular blogs, keeping
web users up-to-date with his adventures. Haddon will return with
knowledge that will aid the Ski Club’s environmental campaign –
Respect the Mountain*** and share his experiences with Ski Club
members.
